We're buying our child an iPhone for her birthday - she's overseas studying this Fall and we'll give to her when we visit. Will she have any problems activating phone with TMobile? (Her current phone is with TMobile - so it's not really "activating" just putting new phone on same number.

Maybe but we need to know where and how you are purchasing this new iPhone. Are you purchasing directly from T-Mobile directly or from Apple?

If from Apple are you purchasing it with T-Mobile (Carrier) financing, Apple Upgrade program or full retail pricing?

I just transferred from my 14 Pro Max to a 16 Pro Max with T-Mobile eSIM while I was on a work trip in Korea. It asks you which eSIMs you want to transfer during the process. No issues with my T-Mobile line. Every other eSIM I had on the 14 Pro Max didn’t transfer over.

If you have an issue doing the direct transfer, I have also added a T-Mobile eSIM using a QR code T-Mobile sent me while I was in Vietnam.

Thanks for sharing your experience - sounds like there are options if it doesn't work right off . . . this is Europe so even less likely to raise scam concerns than Vietnam (although Korea should be cool like Europe).

FWIW this is iPhone 13, which I believe has physical SIM still.

Purchasing from Apple - full retail (with trade in).
OK no issue with the new iPhone being Carrier locked.

Which iPhone is an iPhone 13?

Yes an iPhone 13 still has a physical SIM tray but it can use physical SIM cards and also multiple eSIM. Is your daughter actually using a physical T-Mobile SIM today?
