I have been using an unlocked iPhone, and am thinking about re-activating it using the official method through iTune (mainly because I want to have 2.0 firmware but do not want to follow the hacking community...). My only concern is, does activating through iTune always result in an extension of contract with AT&T? I did not enjoy any subsidy in purchasing this original iPhone and I do not think it is fare to extend my contract for another 2 years.

This is the way it currently works today. iTunes activation leads to a 2-year service commitment. It is not clear if there will be any change as of 11 July as the service providers have not announced an official response.
