Activation of a SIM free iPhone

I have a SIM free phone on the way and I have a regular O2 sim card. I've cut down a spare Vodafone card but before I cut the O2 one I want to see if the Vodafone one works. It works with an adaptor in my 3GS so it's probably OK. Anyway, I'm wondering if SIM free phones need to be activated and if I activate with my Vodafone card will that have any lasting effect?
