activation/other phone question

So like everyone else, I tried to upgrade a 1st gen iPhone to the 2.0 software today, it worked up until the activation.

This phone was working fine, not a problem.

My question is: Can I take my SIM out of the iPhone and pop it in another GSM type phone (like a razer) and have it work so I can at least make and get phone calls???
