Activation Question - Verizon model from Apple

Question to anyone in the know about activating a Verizon iphone 5 purchased from Apple. Is it [required] to activate the phone via computer/itunes, or can one just turn it on, and activate ? I do not plan on downloading any of my music onto the phone, nor movies or games. I will later install apps, but not right away.

when i got my 4s i was able to activate it without computer but i have to connect to a wifi.

you will have to make a phone call if you want to activate your phone from what I have been told

Should have mentioned, I do have a computer, but was just wondering if one could do it by turning on the phone and using 4G instead. Oh well ...
