I just ordered my 3G S to be delivered on the 19th. When they totaled everything up it came to just over $418 with taxes. Not bad.

Then I saw AT&T related charges:

Upgrade fee: $18

Activation fee: $18

But wait.... I'm already an AT&T customer with an iPhone 3G data plan. What am I activating?

Welcome to the wonderful world of ATT (the most evil company on the planet)... That's (one of many reasons) why I'm not with them and using T-Mobile for my iPhone.

wow makes O2 look like a dream!

After you get your phone, call AT&T support and ask them to waive the fee, they should do it for you. I did it last year when I got my 3G.

They are probably charging you to activate the phone, which at $18... is well beyond a rip-off.

We had those on ours as well. We are going to call AT&T and make sure they are removed, because they shouldn't be there (only the upgrade fee). My guess is that Apple isn't checking your accounts or paying attention to whether or not you are a new customer and just showing both fees on all orders. They'll show up on your phone bill.
