Why does the active audio playing stay at the top of my watch even after I have force closed the music/radio app?

I went for for a run today and tracked my run using the workout app. While doing so I was using the music app/radio with Apple Music of course.

Since my my run when I check my watch face it shows the small equalizer icon at the top where notifications are. When I press it it brings me to what was playing before. The music is paused and everything so it’s not using data or battery I don’t believe. But no matter how many times I go in an force close it the icon does not go away. This didnt happen before I opened Apple Music on time. Anyone know what I’m doing or not doing? I don’t want it there unless I have music actually playing

Yeah.. this music indicator is a new thing for watchOS. It will go away when you finished whatever you’re playing (Playlist, Album, Podcast). If you pause it midway it will stay. Clearly many people annoyed by this and Apple might fix its behavior on later update.

(I don’t believe we have a way to force close the app on the watch.)

Yea it’s super annoying. If I’m using a radio station it will never go away because of the unlimited playlist.

Secondly I turned my watch off over night and it was gone this morning. Hopefully they figure something out. I don’t want it there if I’m not using it anymore.

It's a watchOS 5 flaw/bug, its currently still in the 5.1 beta

Still a bug, but as a work-around, you can force close the app that's causing this to appear. That should get rid of it, or at least it did for me when the music app left it visible after disconnecting my Bluetooth speaker.

Tried this and it does not work for me. Still stays at the top of my watch.

Is that for the radio app? I've only tried it with the music app and it seemed to work for that. I'll do some more testing....

Force closing the radio app seems to get rid of it for me.

Just for reference, is this how you force closed the app?
1. Tap on the now playing icon you're trying to get rid of to open the app
2. Hold down the large side button (the power button) until you see the power off option
3. Hold the crown button until you see the app minimise to the centre of the screen (this sequence force closes the app).
When I do this, the now playing icon disappears from the watch face. This seems to work for both the music app and the radio app.
Both of them often seem to leave the now playing icon visible even when music playback is paused which is obviously a bug. Hopefully Apple will fix this, but in the meantime I've been able to get rid of the icon by doing this. Very annoying though.

Whao!! I have used AW since the original and have never known about this method before.

It's pretty useful. Effectively the equivalent of swiping an app up from the app switcher on iPhone. It'll close the app completely down and remove it from memory so it has to be loaded from scratch next time you use it. Also handy if you get an app that isn't working properly or gets stuck in a messed up state.

You can also hit the side button to bring up open apps. Then swipe them to the left and hit the red x. This does the same as force closing them doesn’t it?

No, that just moving it from the dock, not force closing app. If you re open the app it will continue from where you left it.

With watchOS 4 the workout app hanged a lot and I couldn’t find a way to force close app so I have to force restarted every time. Wish I knew about this sooner.

I did not know that. Awesome. Good to know. Also anyone know about merging workout data to another app? I’ve been using MapMyRun but want to start using the workout app. I tried to use RunGap to push it over but it hasn’t brought it across.
