active window issue

I have an issue with some third party apps (e.g., microsft office). If i have multiple programs running and I start up excel (or some other apps), it keeps popping up in the foreground as it starts up even if I am working in a different window. More specifically, if I am checking my mail and I open excel, I want to continue reading my mail while waiting for excel to load, but I can't. Every time I click back to the mail screen, the active window changes to excel every time a new element is loaded. This is a very frustrating behaviour. Do you have any insights on how I could change this?

I was trying to search the forum for possible duplication of this post, but I have difficulty articulating this issue with a few phrases so my search might have been inaccurate.
