I have an old series 2 Apple Watch and have the workout tracker option. When I use the “open goal” option to track my heart rate, calories, etc.. it runs the battery down too fast to allow me to use it again at the gym each night.

Is there a way i could track this info all day on the 2 series?

Or do the newer versions have a better battery life?

I searched and google shows the new version has 18 hours, same as the 2.

You're talking about battery life when new. The battery will deteriorate over time and your Series 2 battery will not be the same now as it was in 1997 or whenever the S2 was launched.

Depending on your OS version, you might be able to go to Settings, Battery. Battery Health on the watch to find the remaining capacity of the battery.

Haha,, looks like it was 2016. But I had to look it up. I haven’t really had any issues with the watch, so I haven’t felt the need to get a newer version. Thank you for the info, I will try that.

Looks like 6.3

I’m not seeing anything in the settings to determine battery health.

When they say “18 hours” is that stand by time? Or actual use?

I would like to know if it is possible to have the open goal track my activity all day. That way I could see total calories burned. Anyone know if this is possible?

Sounds like the battery in your S2 has deteriorated. You could try to replace it yourself or pay Apple to do it but realistically if it doesn't last all day it might be time for something newer

It will definitely last all day, even when I use the open goal to track while I’m at the gy for an hour. It just won’t last if I leave open goal on all day.

You shouldn’t need to activate a Watch exercise to track these metrics. In the Apple Health app, I’m seeing categories for active calories, resting calories, steps, heart rate, etc. I only activate a workout when I’m working out and it’s been a while. Are you not seeing these categories?

Are you using the native workout app? Why would you use that to track all day health metrics?
Yeah, my wife just showed me the activity ring. Definitely much different in terms of tracking calories burned. I am on my feet and moving a lot throughout the day. This is why I wanted to track them. Thanks for the input.

The rings work with or without activating a workout. Everything is still being tracked regardless. The workouts are only there so you can track an actual dedicated workout and differentiate from the rest of the day’s activity. It’s all saved and monitored in the Health app

yeah, starting an open goal workout in a brand new watch will run the battery down just as fast. Firing off those green lights on the backside uses a lot of battery power.

Battery may be lower because when you do a workout, the battery drains faster. This is because it uses resources like heart rate monitors to monitor your heart rate, which rains the battery faster.

I don't think you need to use the Open Goal to get what you want.

The watch will still monitor much of what you want throughout the day just will a little less granularity. It will still record the standing, walking and the heart rate you are doing.

I only use an open goal when I'm out for a proper walk / run etc. and at all other times I can still see what my heart rate, calories have been for that hour be it washing the car or pottering around.

What I have noticed is, the calories seem to be much lower on the watch is just monitoring vs the workout. Not sure which is more accurate.

Which workout are you using? If you use "other" it will credit you with calories/activity even if you don't move at all.

Also, different workouts credit you differently, because the watch tries to calculate how much energy you are using based on what is typical for that type of workout. So if you do a run workout and a walk workout over the same distance at the same speed, you get different activity and exercise numbers.

You could try to use Theater Mode to save power.

Swipe up then scroll to the icon with the Tragedy/Comedy masks. Click on that. Press the Digital Crown.

In Theater Mode the screen only lights up when you tap on it. It won’t light up when you raise your wrist. This greatly cuts down on power to the display. It is a bit annoying to have to always tap the display to see it, but you can’t have everything.
