I'm assuming that the HDDs in the iPod are just like other HDDs in that a 30gig iPod really doesn't hold 30gigs. Anyone know how much space is left after formating and what not?

93%

I'm assuming that you're talking about the fact that in marketing terms, 1GB=1,000,000,000 bytes.

In reality (computer terms), 1GB=1,073,741,824 bytes or 1024^3 bytes.

Using the above numbers, the ratio is 93% So a 30GB iPod will really have 27.9GB of HD space. This number is before you add in the overhead of a filing system, etc.
