I'm interested in purchasing a 2017 MacBook Pro; however, I was wondering from people who already have the computer, how much actual storage do you have once subtract the OS. Also, does the laptop actually start with 128 GB or is it less?

128GB is the manufactured size, formatted is more like 10% less (115GB ish), that's how all HDDs work. MacOS is around 10GB, rounding off leaves around 100GB. Then you have swap space to consider as well as leaving space for updates, downloads etc, around 20% minimum really, leaving 80GB.

So you have around 80GB of space when you start with 128GB SSD. Which isn't a lot for most people, but if you're just browsing the internet and watching Netflix for a living, then you'll probably be fine. For a point however, if you're only just able to afford the 128GB model, you should look at Windows alternatives. Mac's are expensive computers and an expensive platform, if you cannot stretch to 256GB you may struggle to find cases, adapters, software etc. down the road.
