ad hoc vs. infrastructure - ques

my work lappy will not connect to ad-hoc it seems (any ad hoc) be it my phone with mywi, or other ad-hoc broadcasters i see (maybe it is a security block by my company..)

so here is the question, is there a way to tether to the iphone using an "infrastructure" mode?

my buddy's vzw air card seems to transmit in infrastructure mode, and thus i can connect to it with just his password..

No. My work laptop is set up the same way, connecting to ad hoc networks is disabled. Hopefully, you can use USB or BT tethering.
