Is here a single adapter to cover both via and HDMI so i have both available if needed at presentations
Apple only do one or the other - any reason for this ?

I had the same issue so I bought and Apple TV and a vga dongle for it, so far the best solution, every thing works flawlessly, it even works with no access to wifi.

I see two different ones:
http://www.apple.com/shop/product/MJ1K2AM/A/usb-c-digital-av-multiport-adapter
and
http://www.apple.com/shop/product/MJ1L2AM/A/usb-c-vga-multiport-adapter

But I do not see Apple sell one that has both vga and hdmi on one adapter.

Maybe (i do not know if this is possible) you could get the hdmi one and then put a belkin one on the left over usb port to vga port ?

But yeah, you'd end up with multiple dongles I guess. usb-c to hub, hub to the rest.

It's one of the reason I really don't like the macbook just having a single port (of failure)

I ended up buying both dongles, HDMI dongle to connect to my monitor and VGA dongle for presentations. Works flawlessly, albeit a little expensive solution to buy 2 dongles. Then again one dongle with all ports on it would be kinda bulky.
