Add number to contact in Messages missing?

I used to be able to create a contact or add a number to an existing contact in the messages app to be missing for me now?

What am I missing or doing wrong?

If you touch the ">" to the right of the circular phone icon you should get the options. The two are too close together so it's sometimes difficult not to hit the phone icon. Bad layout.

Similar results occur when you press and hold either/both icons. That's easier to do.
