Add-on Battery's Impact on Internal Battery Life?

I just started using the InCase Power Slider on my iPhone 3G. Does anyone know whether using this type of add on battery ultimately destroys the internal battery's ability to receive and hold a charge? What's the best way to use the Slider: 1) Drain down both the external (Slider) and then the internal phone battery all at once, or 2) drain down just the Slider and then recharge it before the internal battery gets tapped? You could say that sparing the internal battery from being drained will hold off having to replace it... or you could say that the internal battery should be cycled to keep its 'memory' healthy. Any data to suggest that one way is better than the other?
