I tried to convert some text to a spoken track in iTunes, but it is stuck at 0%. Viewing the process in Activity Monitor shows that the com.automator.runner.xpc process is not responding, and force quitting it gives this error: Automator encountered an error running this workflow: “Couldn’t communicate with a helper application.”
An .aiff file is created in the specified folder, but it seems that it's only able to convert to speech as far as the first period. For what it's worth, highlighting text in any application, right-clicking, and selecting "start speaking" freezes the application that the text is in.
I have tried rebooting but the error is still there.
I'm using version 10.13.4. From what I've seen online other people have encountered this error only in High Sierra. Is there any way to fix this?
