Call AT&T. and ask about your eligibility for a "cross upgrade". All of the online tools said I was not eligible for subsidized pricing, after one call to AT&T (611) I was informed that if I upgrade the iPad line to the iPhone 5, I can keep the iPhone 4S number, and pay normal subsidized price!

I can now upgrade every year at subsidized pricing, simply by upgrading my iPad line every other year.

Note, you may need to be on the shared data plan for this.

There is a number attached to your iPad? I thought iPad plans were just data only. I'd take the online eligibility over what a lowly customer service rep says.

Yes, I always thought it was weird, but I do have a number attached to my iPad. That's how they do it when you pay for your iPad with a second line. I originally did it when the iPad 2 was released, to take advantage of the "first month free" deal.
