Adding 3G to current ATT Account

I already have a Iphone that I purchased last April. My wife's contract with Nextel is ending in Aug. Can I add her to the account (family plan) purchase a 3G, and then swap phones with her, and swap the numbers to the phones? Basically I want to upgrade to the 3G but must keep my current number.
