Adding a European iPhone to a US account

Sure this has been addressed, but can't find it in the search...

I have a US mac account and am back and forth between the US and Europe. I just bought a European (Netherlands) 3G iPhone and want to add it...but it won't let me because the phone number is not a US number.

Can anyone help?
