Hello forum

Is there a way to add a second account to an iPod touch if you don't have the password to the first, without deleting everything on there?

An elderly relative gave my daughter one of these devices. With the help of a friend, she had already set it up with an iOS account, some paid for apps and some family photos. She supplied the 4 digit code, but unfortunately the iOS account password made for the device appears irretrievably lost (the elderly relative doesn't really understand what it is, and her friend is apparently silent on the matter). This means that my daughter cannot update anything or download anything new from the app store. It's becoming rapidly defunct therefore.

I think I can factory reset it and start again with a new account (can I?), but obviously this would lose all the original content.

Many thanks

Nope. There's sadly still a one "user" per device limit enforced by consumer versions of iOS.*

You're going to have to reset it in absentia a miracle...

* Not to be confused with AppleIds - it is possible to add multiple AppleIds to a "user" - but that requires you to already have full access to the device. Also education based iPads can have multiple "users" - this also doesn't help you here.
