I've read several articles that say to go to the group message > Details and swipe up to reveal the edit conversation name field. However, I when swipe up or down, no such field is revealed. Any thoughts? Currently using iOS 8. Thanks!

Only there if everyone in the group is using iMessage. If you've got a couple of Android people, etc., then you won't have the option.

group messages with SMS not iMessage? I've never heard of this

Adding Custom Name to Group Message in iOS 8

You've been able to do that since at LEAST iOS 3.0, if not earlier.

I found out later that it's not available in the UK/my carrier I've had since iPhone/iOS 4. sorry
