Adding Garageband 'sounds'

I can't open the garageband files in the library to add to GB. I want to use the 'Nature Sounds' file but I'm told

“Nature Sounds.exs” could not be handled because GarageBand cannot open files of this type.

I don't have any of the GB files running in the app.

Using Mountain Lion on MacBook Air, I couldn't access any of the additional sounds. The App seemed to think they were there and so I couldn't download them . Had to reinstall ML. All okay since then.
