Adding images from Safari to iPhoto library

When right clicking on an image when using safari, there is an option to 'add image to iphoto'. But when doing so I get the message

"Safari cant add image to iphoto library. The image wasn’t added to the iPhoto library because Safari can’t communicate with iPhoto."

Instead I have to 'Save image as..'

Why am I prompted to save images to iPhoto if its then not possible?
