Adding RAM to a 2012 27" iMac: price vs. performance.

I know it has 4 user-accessible slots, but I can't find the user manual on Apple's site yet. If I wanted to upgrade to 16 MB total in the most cost-efficient manner, would adding 2 8GB sticks be best? Would performance be better if I just used 2 8GB sticks instead? I understand 2 8GB sticks would cost more than just adding 8GB to the stock 8GB that Apple ships with the iMac.

There are 4 slots. It comes pre-loaded with 8GB total (2 4GB sticks). If you are looking to get to 16GB the cheapest thing to do would buy 2 more 4GB sticks and put them in the 2 open slots.
