Adding subtitles to movies in iMovie HD?

I want to add subtitles to a dialog intensive movie but I found that imovie´s subtitle option is really crummy (or I dont know how to use it) since you have to time everything and is unintuitive.

How can I add subtitles? I´m planning on making a DVD of the movie as well so maybe somehow I can import the subtitles (in .srt format?) into iDVD or something.

Please help.
