Adding USB 3.0 to 2009 iMac

Hi guys,

Im not sure if anyone has attempted this but i wanted to add usb 3.0 to a 2009+ 27" iMac. I have searched all over the internet and forums and i cant seem to find anything useful.

Well the way i want to do this is by replacing the wifi card with a usb 3.0 PCIe adaptor like this one via PCIe extension cables:

im obviously gonna have to remove the mounting brackets then find somewhere to put the card. I am willing to remove the optical drive if need be but i would prefer not. My question for you guys is, is there any room where i can fit this thing? Is there an easier option other then buy a new computer?

I thought you needed an Ivy Bridge processor or newer for USB 3.0. Or am I misinformed?

You haven't found any information because it's not possible. iMacs don't have PCIe slots.

You can only replace the HDD and RAM in iMacs.

If you're interested in a good read, search for the thread where a guy wants to convert a PPC iMac into an Intel iMac.

It looks like it can be done, but it's not going to be easy. First, you have to set up eSata on your iMac. Options are DYI or pay OWC to do it. Here's a link for getting an eSata port on your iMac.

You haven't found any information because it's not possible. iMacs don't have PCIe slots.

iMacs do have a PCIe slots, physically. Of course, they are not real PCIe.
