Hi all,

I have a MacBook Pro 2017 and I've just bought an ultra-widescreen so I can use it for studying etc. and leave my laptop closed. I've connected it via the HDMI and using a hub to USB-C.

I've just unplugged my USB-C power cable leaving the display one still in and the external screen went off.

I don't suppose anyone knows why? I thought it would still work just running off the laptop battery? Call me OCD but I don't like to leave my laptops on charge when they're charged for fear of ruining the battery!

Ideally, I want to still use my set up with the laptop closed and on the stand whilst not plugged in...

Any help would be great! Thank you!

Ben

Using the battery will kill it an order of magnitude faster. The battery isn't powering the laptop, the power brick is powering the laptop. The screen is going to suck as much power as running the CPU on full blast or more. A dell 32" 4K monitor sucks 100W.

Thanks, Id di just read that. Although the battery is at 100% with the charging bolt through it, it's powered by the brick not the battery. I just worried that leaving it 'on charge' would ruin the battery. Thanks for the help and coming back to me so quickly! :)

You don't want to run off of AC 100% of the time, but it would be silly to try and run the computer off of battery all the time while connected to an external monitor.
