Address Book archives contain nothing, then revert to current info

I regularly export my Address Book archive in case I have an issue. I recently tried to restore from an archive (this was going to be temporary to access an old contact) and found it contained absolutely nothing. But I closed then reopened Address Book and ALL of my most recent contact info was restore (like I'd done nothing). I was back where I started. I've repeated the steps with heaps of other archive files and the same happened.

These archives have been saved from several different machines and several OS X installs on each machine. Weird!

Any ideas!?!?
