address book & panel question?

I am new to Mac, so please bear with me. I have done searches and read tips but could not find an answer to my question= which is
1. I need to edit address panel. Somehow several addresses are showing up twice. Also, some of the names are showing screen names instead of the person's real name.
2. I really don't understand address book and its' purpose. Not all the names are listed. Are the two book and panel related?

Thanks in advance for any help you might can give me. I need to get the mail program organized.
