Address Book: Telephone format question

I'm sure I've seen it before that there were preset formats for telephone numbers in address book but when I look I only have the custom option. is this normal?

Why not create your own format/s?

I have tried creating my own formats, but the phone numbers I have don't go into that format, eg I created a format 00000 000 000, but my saved phone numbers stay in the form 00000000000.
