Address Book temporary dropping names

Have MacOSX10.5.8 software, been using Address book (AB) about 3 yrs. Tendency look up a name, then go to another name and the first name will be "lost", cannot retrieve, not hidden on sidebar, have to reopen AB to find name and/or go to "All" and manually look for the name.
How are you resolving this?
