adds a .pot extension to all my downloads, Why?

If I download something from my mail, such as power point presentations or other videos from the web, my mac adds a .pot for example:

name_file.ppt.pot
video.wvm.pot

so then I have to rename the file, and leave it without the .pot for it to work properly. I wonder why does it do it automatically, can I avoid this ?

This seems to happen to people now and again.
