adium buddy problem

my adium always works great, but there's this stupid problem with 30% of my contacts: as if they were eternally offline (or invisible all the time) which of course is nonsense.
for exaple i can't tell if my best friend is online or not, so she has always to make the 'first step' of writing me. i know this is not an all-important thing, but it's pretty annoying
i tried re-installing adium twice, and did this 'set preferences to default' thing they tell you to do in adium help
but nothing seems to work
anyone an idea what i should do?

Maybe her MSN is set to "Invisible"?

we all use icq accounts
it's 9 or 10 out of 30 people of my contact list are _never_ online for me, like offline since i installed it 6 months ago [when i switch to my windows icq acc it's normal again]
and they are not invisible for me or something
