im having some confusion with adium. the little green light next to the persons SN meaning theyr signed on will come on, but under that it will have their away message. how can i tell whether theyr realy away?

If a person is away, the chat icon will turn read. If they are available, they will be green.
It also depends on what icon pack you're using, but with the default: Green means Online, Yellow means Idle, Red means Away, Gray/clear means Offline.
With AIM it is also possible to have a status message without being Away, but I don't if anything other than iChat and Adium support it.

Adium supports messages while online. If you click on your status in Adium, in the pull down menu there is an option for custom green status where you can have a message while displaying online.
AIM also supports this so that gets shown in Adium as well.
I think of them as "Here" messages as opposed to "Away" messages.
