searched for this subject beforehand and couldn't find an appropriate thread (even searched the subject on Google)...

how the *bleep* do I turn off sound notifications on Adium?!

I don't mind the screen pop-ups, but I can't stand the doorbell noise going off every two seconds.

If you take the time to look at the software preferences, you'll see the option under Events.
 
ah, I just went through the options and saw I can turn all the noises off. wish there were a way to just get notifications for when someone messages me, but that's life. thanks!

There is, just leave the audio notification for message received and remove the ones you don't want.
