I have been getting spam messages on Adium, not from random people but from the people i know and have as friends. They do not know that they are doing it and it just appears on my messages without them doing anything. Is this a virus/trojan thingy on my mac or would this be a problem on their end, if anyone has this problem or a solution then i would be very grateful to hear, i don't really want to delete them from my account as i want to talk to them in future.

It's a problem on their end, not yours.

I can't remember off the top of my head whether the solution is for them to change their password or run a virus scan, though both wouldn't hurt.

It's possible their accounts were hacked, usually because of weak passwords. Have them change their passwords to stronger ones to see if it resolves the spam issues.
