I can't seem to change my display name in Adium, I type it in in preferences bu t it always reverts to the user name stored on the macbook. Ideas?

Have you tried changing it in the main Adium window?

preferences>accounts tab>double click your user name >personal tab>"display name"> "ok"

that should do the trick
