Adjusting brightness of photos based selected areas

I’m taking a photo in low light with a 7+. I click on the white fur of a dog and it darkens the image, I click on a mildly bright iPad screen and it darkens the image, I click on a toddler’s light grayish sweater and it lightens the image. What is going on with how it selects the brightness based on selected area?
