i always hear how adobe's flash plugin is not optimized for mac and that it does not run very well, and puts a lot of load on the system.

my question is, is there any open source flash plugin alternatives that runs better? I know that linux has some.

I also hear that there is a plugin that allows you to change youtube's flash video into quicktime. This apparently makes the quality better and runs better. Anyone use this plugin?

You are on a fool's errand. The problems with Flash are with Flash. No plug-in installed on your system is going to fix Flash's problems. The only way to fix Flash is to replace it with something better.

The QuickTime Plug-in can play a lot of Flash content, but only the Flash Player Plug-in can handle the latest stuff. There are several standalone Flash video players available on the Mac. To the best of my knowledge, there are no opensource alternatives to Adobe's Flash Player Plug-in.

I really wish there was an alternative to flash. I had the hardest time getting it to work for Opera in Ubuntu.
There are a few open source ones out there that I know of for Linux. Not sure for OSX though...
