Adobe PDFMaker and Word Headings into Bookmarks

I have been doing quite a bit of searching on the web, and it seems that much to my surprise, Adobe Acrobat for the Mac cannot make a PDF with automatic bookmarks based on the Heading styles used in the Word documents like the Windows Acrobat can.

Can anyone confirm if this is truly the case, and if so, are there any apps on the Mac that can perform this [critical for me] function?
