adobe premiere cs4 hangs upon import

hello,
Ive been trying to import some footage into adobe premiere cs4 on the iMac. This is the first time I've ever used adobe premiere on the imac. When i try to import anything (ie: import an avi file, sequence, or old adobe premiere project) the program just hangs for hours.

I had been working on a project in adobe premiere on the windows. Then i took that project and transferred it over to the mac. When i try to import anything at all, again, it hangs.

I;d appreciate any help with this.'Thanks
