Ok I broke down and bought Photoshop CS5 extended. So I enter the serial number and begin to use the program. No problems. A day later when I open it up it says to enter my Adobe ID - "otherwise" Adobe reserves the right to reduce any complementary subscription period. Whatever that means.

I can still use the program but periodically the request for my Adobe ID pops up.

I don't understand why I have to enter an Adobe ID just to use PS CS5. Can anyone here shed any light on this? I figured after spending 700 big ones for a legal serial number that would be enough for them.

I've got both CS5 and LR3, and have never registered either one with an Adobe ID. All updates are still offered, and all features work as they should. Don't worry about it. My wife has Elements 9 on her system, same deal.

It has to do with the CS Live component in Photoshop, in order to use it you must register with an Adobe ID. Take a look at:
http://www.adobe.com/products/creativesuite/cslive/

When I registered my CS5 Extended, I was offered a free OnOne's PhotoTools plugins, which later i updated to the Pro version for $49.00. I created an ID when I registered, and this ID is one of my E-mail addresses. I did the same with PhotoTools, and I can download and install newer plugins free of charge from their "PhotoTools Exchange" webpage. There are certain benefits by registering at Adobe, since they have CS5-user forums, and things like that.

Another Registration Question

I am a teacher (K-12) and my best friend (a University Professor) bought me a copy of CS 5.5 Design Premium Student and Teacher Edition. He went to the trouble to get the serial codes and everything from Adobe (meaning he sent in his ID, etc.). Now how do I register? Can I just input the info he gave me? Or do I need to contact Adobe and send in my credentials as well? Or do I need to register in his name? (I hope not)...Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Go to the Adobe site and find the Education section. You should find a link that takes you to a third party web site for authorization (company is called Identit-e, or something similar). You follow their on-screen instructions and it should take 3-5 days for them to determine your eligibility and email you your serial number. If your school is listed in their system and you have an active email address from that school, your authorization is instantaneous. Otherwise, you have 30 days to use the full version of the software while you wait for your serial number.

Okay, so basically I do need to get a new serial number? Not the one that my friend gave me? Thanks for the help.

If he has not registered the program on 2 computers (it sounds like he bought it FOR you) then his serial numbers should be fine. If you need a new serial number, that will cost what the software costs.

Yes, he bought it for me. It is not registered, he just wanted to have everything ready for me when he gave it to me. I just wasn't sure how to register since he bought it and used his school credentials, instead of my school credentials. So I can register with my name and use the serial number he gave me? Thanks for the help.

You can definitely use his serial number, that isn't a problem. I'm not entirely sure how adobe's internal computers work to verify a registration, but I would say that it is probably best to play it safe and enter your friend's info.

Student and Teacher editions do not come with serial numbers. You are provided a product code that gives you a 30 day trial. If you want to continue to use it like normal, you must enter the product code with the third party that Adobe uses to verify your eligibility. It doesn't matter who purchased it as long as the person's informatio used to fill out the form is eligible for the Student Teacher price. You said that you were, so you can use your own information.
