I have a 2015 13" MBPro that Apple is covering under the delamination recall... while in for repairs, they said for another $100 they will fix some water damage they noticed, and replace the entire display unit if I paid for the optional water damage repair.

My question is what do they do when it's water damage? Dry it out and clean/coat it with something, or replace parts?

And when they fix the delamination under the recall, don't they replace the entire display already? Or if they're going to do less than that, does anyone know just what the do or replace?

I never had anything fixed by them, so I don't know if it's approached with a take-care-of-you attitude, or a Geek Squad rip off approach... I'm attatching the photos they sent me for those who would be able to make something of them. I can see moisture detection tabs activated, but that's all I can make of it.

Would you pay the extra $100 for them to "replace the entire display unit" or do you think that is done under the recall as the repair already and just used to encourage me to elect to do the water damage repair?

Thanks in advance for your input.

The screen will need to be replaced in its entirety. There's no way to 're-laminate' the existing display and it's not really modular in any way, even if you wanted to. As for liquid damage, those liquid sensors are on the motherboard, so they'll replace it. They don't do board level repairs (too much hassle, from their point of view). A new logic board, at least in the UK, is roughly £400-500, so $100 is a great deal. I'd take it!

The paperwork they provide you at the end once the repair is complete and paid for will fully list exactly what they've done, along with parts and part numbers, so you'll be able to see in black and white any parts they've replaced. They certainly don't clean or coat anything like that. It's very much a take-care-of-you attitude, rather than any half fixes.
