I run a small media company - we've been around for a year and the bulk of our work is video production, photography, graphic design, and basic web design.
Our office has two iMacs, a MacBook Pro, and a G5 Tower/Heater that we use for video-grunt work - like DVDs and things. We've been using Lacie drives to backup work and move files to/from the multiple computers, but our volume is increasing to a point that we need a better solution. I'd like a server - but I know literally nothing about the topic.
Basically, I'd like the server to be able to back-up files and also be something that each computer could login to at the same time, drop files onto it, and then be accessed by another user on another computer, to avoid the whole put it on a hard drive and then take it to the other computer. We guarantee a backup of a year of all video footage, but it'd be nice to keep it long-term just to have a footage archive. But, not really sure about a cost effective solution for that? I'm estimating about 7-10TB of footage this year and next. Also, I'm not really worried about login things at this point, everyone uses the same computer everyday.
Would getting a Mac Mini with OS X server and hooking it up to a Drobo or something do the trick? I'd really appreciate any help. Thanks!
