Advice needed on buying unlocked Iphone abroad

I will be traveling to the far-east in the next 2 weeks, and I want to buy an unlocked Iphone that will work on all networks.

I have a O2 sim card already, and I will use that to operate my Iphone. I have heard all sorts of rumors on buying unlocked Iphones and bringing them back to the UK. I was wondering if anybody had problems with this.
