I've done a search, I saw the pricing plans but I'm still baffled. (no flames, I just need some real answers)

I have a plan that has 3 iphones on it now. All about a year into 2 year contract. ATT sent a snail mail saying next month they'll change the National Pricing plan (no details of what it means).

I'd like to get a new iPhone, but I don't really see the value in features vs what I have. 3g would be ok, but 2.5x isn't enough and I like GPS on its own device.
Aside from those 2 things what else would I be missing out on?

Can I simply buy a new iPhone, swap out the sim card and have a working phone without changing any plans with ATT?
