Advice on buying a used 2011 or wait for the 2012

Howdy,

me and my wife are on the market for a new imac. Our needs are picture editing, digital drawing and in the best case some gaming as well.

For these needs ive been looking at a used 27" i7 3.4 ghz with the 6970. If we dont buy this used one we would probably get the 21" when its released. My thinking is that since the 2012 might only be a spec bump, would we get more performance out of the 2011 27" than from a new 2012 21"??

I know the specs for the 2012 are not revealed but I would anyways appreciate som speculative answers.

Hi, a lot of people are waiting for the Mountain Lion launch with possible iMac spec bump with it or near that date. I would just wait a couple of weeks before buying because you could get the next one or a cheaper version of the current one if it releases in a couple of week.

Just like everyone, I had been waiting since December or so to buy my first iMac.

I decided to go ahead a buy a 2011:

One month old 2011 27" 3.1 i5, 6970m 1gb - $1400

16gb ram - $100
512gb SSD - $400
Apple care - $129

So $2029 spent for a mint iMac with Apple care until May 2015. That's less than what a new 2012 will cost with tax from Apple so to me it was well worth it. Just my 2 cents.

If gaming is a consideration, a wait for the 2012's with this year's top mobile GPUs will be worth it. Last year's 6970m is a fine card. This year's offering should double that performance.

Thank you all for your helpful replies. Appreciate it. I will have to consider how important gaming will be and decide upon that. I have an xbox already but diablo 3 and other games look tempting

The lack of rumors just makes it a harder decision to wait. Anyways, thanks again.
