I have a 2014 15" Macbook Pro with 16gb Ram256 gb & SSD that I use for photo editing (lightroom and photoshop). Lightroom used to open immediately, but now it takes a good 10-15 seconds for it to load completely. I also noticed that it gets hot and the fan kicks on when editing photos in Lightroom. Last month, I got a black screen when waking the laptop from sleep. I followed online instructions and got the OS to eventually boot properly. Since then, when I initially wake the laptop, the screen will quickly go black and then it will come back to the password screen. This only occurs occasionally.

I'm not sure if the above issues are a sign that my MacBook or SSD is wearing out or if they are normal occurrences. I never had a MacBook or an SSD before, so thought I'd see what experienced users thought. If it's wearing out, I'll most likely start looking at the 2018 and maybe 2017 MacBooks as a replacement. Thanks.

what audit13 said and have we ran first aid in disk utilities frequently?
quitting app also helps run these macbook easier as well.
my MBA fan just started spinning, maybe due to our humidity we have now.
the mac mini is kinda hot near the ports because I'm converting DVD and watching baseball online.
i deem these as just another day of these machines churning info in august, 2018.

Open Activity Monitor, Energy and CPU tabs and see if there isn't any rogue process eating your CPU.

This happened to me once, a bitcoin miner hijacked my Mac and made it next to useless. Removed it in 2 minutes and it was back to normal.

How full is the SSD? Are you restarting or shutting down regularly?
I regularly use external drives for my image files, so I still have about 85 gb unused. As far as restarting or shutting down, I rarely do that. I just put it to sleep when I’m done. That not a good thing?

Thanks, I’ll check that out when I get home.

I like to restart or shutdown and restart regularly as this clears any programs that may be hanging around in ram or virtual memory.
