I'm trying to sort out my tags in preparation for transferring my music to my iPhone. I mostly listen to Rock/Indie/etc, i.e. performers are people or bands so I don't have complications with orchestra/composer/conductor issues.
For my old non-iPhone setup I just used the Artist tag for the person/band and set the "Artist Sort" tag to get "David Bowie" to list under "Bowie, David" (for instance).
I need to edit the tags on all my music for other reasons so I'm wondering whether it is in any way either useful or dangerous to also set the "Album Artist" and "Album Artist Sort" tags. Is there any benefit to doing this? Might it break anything in iTunes or on the iPhone if I have both set (they would be the same values). When browsing on the iPhone by artist, which does the player use in preference?
It's a bit of extra work to set the album artist and album artist sort tags but if there's any benefit to it then it seems to make sense to do it now when I'm going through every tag anyhow, but then again if there's no benefit at all, or only very marginal benefit, then there's no point.
