Ok just took the plunge to update my 4 year old Mac pro with a new i7 27 inch iMac. I went for the 256 ssd and 2 tb drive model. My question is this.

I know I can move the home folder to the 2 TB drive once set up. However can this be done at set up..?. When you switch on the new Mac and it asks do you want to transfer your old data.

My home is almost 1 TB without iTunes so won't fit on the SSD.

Anyone done this? Has apple thought about this and the iMac automatically allocates large home folders to the HD rather than the SSD ??

Cheers

I've not had my hands on one of these machines, but I've heard rumors that home directories are automatically put on the disk drive on these machines.

Even if that's not true, it wouldn't be difficult to do by hand:

1) Migrate everything except your home directory.
2) Create a user with a different name that you can delete later.
3) Use ditto or CCC to clone your home directory to the proper drive
4) Create your proper user account.
5) Through the advanced settings in System Preferences, change the location it looks for the home directory.
6) Change ownership/permissions of the home directory to match the proper UID.

Thank you that sound exactly right if it does not utilize the HDD on transfer.

Cheers
